In my experience one of the biggest hurdles for people when it comes to purchasing older game carts whether they are a collector or someone just discovering the amazing games that released in the 90's and through the early 2000's is bad save batteries and not having the ability to replace them. Well the CR1616 (like its brother the CR2025) battery holder is the solution to this problem. If done correctly, it only has to be soldered once and then you can simply replace the battery with a new one without having to solder anything. This is the ideal solution for everyone who cannot solder, especially if you have a collection of games that need the save battery replaced. If you cannot do this yourself, you can hire someone to solder the battery holder for you and remove the old battery that is no longer working.

The CR2025 battery holder that fits in these carts is expensive by comparison. They cost about $5.00 if you have them printed and about $9.00 from a seller. For those wondering, you can use the CR1616 battery holder in the games that take CR2025 batteries. The CR1616 holder pictures below costs between about $0.80-$1.49 depending on how many you need. You can purchase these from eBay, Amazon or Aliepress. The following link is to Amazon. Note: This is not an affiliate link.

The main advantage to using these kind of battery holders is that anyone can now replace the battery without the need of a soldering iron, solder, flux, solder wick or the skills necessary to get the job done. Additionally it allows you to choose the brand of battery to install, thus avoiding all those poor tabbed batteries that tend not to last very long. The single disadvantage to this is that there are a ton of these holders on the market and the majority of them do not fit the carts they claim to work with. I have found this to be especially true for Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games.

That being said, below is a video demonstrating how to install these and where you can purchase them. The CR1616 battery holder in the video is the only one I have found that fits GB/GBC games and requires no modification to get the PCB back into its plastic shell. If you plan on purchasing some of these make sure they do not exceed 2.81mm in thickness, otherwise you will either have to modify the cart, the battery holder or accept a bulging shell. None of these options are good because the bulging shell usually results in damage. Its best to purchase the one that will fit.
