The Game Boy Pocket released in North America in September of 1996. It was the first redesigned version of the original Game Boy in a smaller and lighter form factor. Key improvements were the screen had a true black & white display and it only required 2 AAA batteries instead of the 4 AA the original Game Boy needed. That being said the most notable issue with the handheld, much like its other siblings is that the screen has no backlight. In order to make this handheld viable in 2024 it really needs an IPS screen with a backlight. There are wonderful kits available that can fully restore an old, beaten up Game Boy Pocket with a much improved screen so that it can be enjoyed for years to come. Even after nearly 28 years the Game Boy still has games worth playing today!!!

Below you will find a video I made showing how to build a Game Boy Pocket with an IPS screen. You can purchase these IPS kits for the Game Boy Pocket on eBay, Amazon or Aliexpress and they cost about $50USD.
