Today I have a NEW 3DS console that has a broken latch for the 4 pin touch screen ribbon cable socket that needs to be repaired.

As you can see in the following picture, the latch is broken near the bottom

Broken or damaged latches on these types of sockets will have the following symptoms for the touch screen:
  • Touch screen sometimes works
  • Touch screen doesn't work
  • Phantom touches causes the cursor to bounce around the screen

There are other components that plug into this socket. You can find these types of sockets in all Nintendo DS, DSI, 3DS and 2DS consoles. They are used for the touchscreen, microphone, 3D vision and circle pad.

There are 2 ways to do this repair, you can replace the broken latch as long as the socket doesn't have any physical damage to the pins or the plastic. If it does have damage you will need to solder a new socket on the motherboard. For this repair I made a detailed video showing how to replace the latch for this socket and it requires no soldering!!!
